How long can you store .22LR ammunition

.22LR ammunition doesn’t have a specific shelf life. It’s not time that degrades the ammunition but rather how it is stored. As long as the rounds are stored correctly, it will last. This is the same for any calibre ammunition as shelf life does not differ depending on the bullet size.

You can tell if ammunition is old and has not been kept correctly as the grease dries out and gives the lead a white, chalky look. This reduces the bullets accuracy as you need the grease to lubricate the barrel when fired. What’s more, if the rounds are stored somewhere where there is high humidity, this will also affect accuracy.

Effective ammunition storage

Good storage conditions are easy to achieve. Keep ammunition in a cool, dry area indoors. Store the ammo in a metal ammunition box with rubber seals to prevent any moisture affecting the rounds.
